Even if one’s thoughts turn immediately to bingo halls, whose proceeds are legally obligated in Texas to benefit one or more charitable organizations, the image is one of a room filled with elderly women for whom bingo at the local hall is a major social event. But for the standing-room-only crowd that packed the Universal City council chambers on July 15 at the city’s regularly scheduled meeting, bingo represented ugly traffic, community blight and armed robbery. Whether or not it was a fair picture, the passion of community residents was enough to draw unanimous opposition from the council for a conditional use permit that would have transformed the old Acme Lumber building on Pat Booker Road into a combination Mediterranean restaurant and bingo hall. Salt Lake City airport expansion underway By: The Associated Press July 21, 2014 3:03 pm 0 SALT LAKE CITY Salt Lake City travelers in the next decade will catch expansive views of the Wasatch range, move faster through security and have more shops to choose from once crews finish work on a $1.8 billion airport, officials said Friday. The update is overdue, they contend, on the 50-year-old facility that original builders did not anticipate would become a major airline hub. We need today a modern and efficient airport that can serve not only Salt Lake City but the entire intermountain region, Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker told about 150 people at a Friday ceremony. Bulldozers have rolled onto a sandy lot southwest of the current facility as the reconstruction begins this week.
