There are a few design trends that I’ve come to favor over the past few years – ombre being one of them.

From the French term for “shaded,” ombre is a color effect where the color gradually changes from light to dark over a particular product or object.

From the runways to home decor (and even onto hair) ombre has made quite an impact on the design industry over the past year, making its way onto items such as shower curtains, glamorous evening gowns and home accessories. These slight color changes are sophisticated and elegant, two design terms we at GHID highly favor.

The Renovation and Remodeling Show presented at the conveniently located Portland Memorial Coliseum. This comprehensive and expansive home show brings together homeowners and many of the most knowledgeable and experienced remodeling and building experts. If you are hesitant about making a bunch of holes in the wall, do not fret there is hope! A great way to start piecing your gallery together is to create templates for your pieces with newspaper or just arrange the pieces on the floor. Either route you go, you’ll be able to map out your plan on the wall before diving in with the hammer and nail.

Here are a few shots of past projects and also some future inspiration to jump start your gallery wall.

• Symmetry is a great way to get started if you have a collection of coordinating pieces. This can be taken in many different directions, from creating a perfectly symmetrical palette with clean lines throughout to making a geometric outside boundary for the art to follow.

• Mixing medias is a great way to mix up your gallery wall. I absolutely love this approach. For example, mixing sculptural unframed art with pieces that are varying sized frames, etc. Below is a client with a lifetime of art collecting to show, you can see that the options are endless when creating a mix of medias.

• Working from the inside -> out is a great rule of thumb. If you have a piece that is larger than the rest, start with that piece first and work your way around and out.

• A technique that makes a statement is the use of a single horizon line. I’ve been anxious to try this out, simple yet could give a very luxe feel to a hall or stairwell.

Yep, that’s right – we finally have a few after images from a project we wrote about a few months back…read more about our design processes’ and client’s vision here.

We completed the install a few days prior to the December 25th holiday, which made our client’s incredibly happy! Not only did they feel as though Christmas came early, they were excited to show off the space to their entire family that came to visit for Christmas.

As you can tell from the image above, these client’s love color – in fact, most of the accents and accessories they had previously owned were in vibrant shades of blue, green and orange – not the typical Oregon color palette (we know), however, there IS a way to incorporate these bright hues into your Pacific Northwest home.

Here’s how…

Remember less is more. A few splashes of color goes a long way.

Tropical doesn’t necessarily mean palm trees. We incorporated a variety of greens and potted plants into our design scheme, all of which work well within the Pacific Northwest look and feel. Greenery scattered throughout your space creates a sense of the outdoors, in without necessarily leaving your doors and windows open – important to remember here in the Pacific Northwest. Think tropical, then stop and ask yourself what is similar in my area? Or how can I make that more relate-able to my area?

Appropriately accessorize. Our clients had collected a variety of shells over the years and wanted to incorporate them into the design. On install day we collected shells from around the home and selected a small group to use in the living room. Often times an accessory like a sea-shell can feel out of place, even cheesy – especially if the home isn’t located at the coast. So we opted to use this particular accessory sparingly – again, less is more. But this also goes for any accessory item or theme – a variety is always best.

The most important aspect of this room was the livability factor. The client’s and their two young children live in this space (which is located just off the kitchen) and intend on using it for family nights as well as when they entertain. Being that this space is the central hub of the home, it was important for us to incorporate ample seating in a few areas of the room – as well as selecting practical fabrics, textiles and accessories.

The client’s had purchased a leather sectional just before moving up to Portland so we wanted to really warm up the space using fabrics, textures and unique accessories.

As you can see, our clients love color – and we really wanted to brighten up the space with additional pops of color using pillows, accessories and the perfect lounge chair upholstery fabric.

We also used vibrant accessories such as the tangerine coffee table book and turquoise shells below:

There was one shelving unit in the space where we decided to show off a few family portraits as well as various decorative objects ie: a ceramic sphere, greenery, and decorative books. Want to learn more about how to accessorize a bookshelf? Read more here.

Dance into the New Year with this Vivacious and Appealing Reddish Orange…

It’s that time of year again – new beginnings, new resolutions and the official announcement of Pantone’s color of the year…

This year the Pantone color specialists have chosen what they refer to as a vivacious and appealing reddish orange called Tangerine Tango – and just like the Tango it is sure to captivate it’s audience with it’s bold, seductive energy.

“The 2011 color of the year, PANTONE 18-2120 Honeysuckle, encouraged us to face everyday troubles with verve and vigor. Tangerine Tango, a spirited reddish orange, continues to provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward”. (Pantone)

Although we don’t incorporate the color into many of our projects here at GHID, we’re all pretty big fans of this dramatic hue.

Not only have we incorporated a similar reddish orange into our promotional marketing, we’ve recently used the color as an accent in one of our east-coast projects (pictured below).

Orange is naturally energetic and incredibly lively which indubitably works best in common areas or spaces intended for activity and entertaining. Subtle oranges like a sorbet can work in rooms built for restful relaxing such as a master bath, reading room or nursery. But as a rule of thumb, vibrant oranges like this year’s Tangerine Tango really work best in larger spaces that welcome activity.
